My Journey with Ayurveda: Marcia De Luca

Many years ago I went to India for the first time. I stayed in New Delhi for a month, organizing my company’s participation in the International Trade Fair. My heart was deeply touched the moment I set foot in that ancient and sacred country. A different energy hung in the air as I’d never felt before.

As I traveled throughout the country that month, I came in contact with Ayurveda, the oldest healing system in the universe.

I was ecstatic, not only with the knowledge but especially with the wisdom of Ayurveda.

I wanted to drink from the source. I wanted to unravel the mysteries I sensed existed - mysteries of life!

I was delighted and bought all the books about Ayurveda available at the time. I met wise gurus and avidly absorbed every word of their knowledge. I dove headlong with extreme interest, I wanted to know everything there was to know.

I came to understand that to achieve "the secret of longevity,” I had to follow the wise precepts and teachings of this ancient medicine.

Align with Nature’s Rhythms

Ayurveda taught me the importance of integrating myself with nature and its rhythms. It wisely teaches that we all have a special place in the universe and are of equal value.

At the same time, we each have unique characteristics and must be treated individually. What helps to balance one of us will not necessarily balance another, because we are intrinsically different.

Ayurveda teaches that the presence of three doshas is what makes us different.

Each of us has the three doshas, or energies, in different proportions. Knowing your dosha helps you adjust to a better diet and understand your reactions to each season and to the elements. Discover your dosha and you’ll better understand how to achieve balance in yourself and with all of nature.

An Ayurvedic Approach to Health

Ayurveda’s perspective on healthy living absolutely enchanted me. This healing system doesn’t just focus on taking care of ailments or curing disease. Rather, it focuses much more on maintaining and improving one’s health.

Ayurveda is all about prevention over cure. It teaches that constant, careful attention to body, mind and spirit can help people reach their full human potential and achieve true wellness. Ayurveda realizes that health and disease aren’t inevitable — life can be both prolonged and improved by making healthy choices.

Spreading the Ayurvedic Wisdom

After leaving India, I continued my study of Ayurveda at the Chopra Center for Well-Being in La Jolla, California. I completed all the trainings that were available back then, then opened an Ayurvedic treatment center in Sao Paulo, Brazil. During my years of practice, I developed a program called Philosophy of Living Well to inspire people on the path of wellness through Vedic wisdom.

The purpose of my center was to inspire people — especially women — to practice appropriate self-care and take better care of themselves. I helped them focus more on eating well, finding time to stop and breathe, choosing safe products, and being more aware overall of their actions - of choices that can have a positive or negative impact on themselves both individually and collectively.

As the Indians say, this is my dharma - my gift.

I have dedicated it for decades to the benefit of many. By fulfilling my dharma, I find happiness in seeing the transformation of people who dedicate themselves to the Philosophy of Living Well. They find peace, harmony, joy, love, and a new purpose in their lives.

Every year I return to India, that sacred motherland, to recharge my batteries and renew my own knowledge in the wisdom of Ayurveda.

Choosing Natural

Ayurveda preaches that we must always favor the products of nature for the benefit of our health, such as organic botanicals free of toxins, seasonal plants harvested locally, and the many herbs that Mother Nature offers us with love and care.

These many naturally-occurring plants and herbs have a purpose. They can be extremely effective in providing nutrition, treating physical conditions, and improving personal care. We should always favor natural products to optimize our health.

The same is true for beauty care. Using the right natural herbs and oils can help enhance beauty in a safe way.

Beauty is best preserved with products that are free of toxins and gentle on the skin and hair.

Natural health and beauty products are better for the planet and better for the body.

As Ayurveda teaches, we do not have to expect to be sick to treat ourselves. Daily care and attention has a true impact on our health and on our natural beauty.
